Trump administration announces eight new arms packages for Taiwan

(MENAFN) The Trump administration on Wednesday authorized a series of eight major arms deals with Taiwan, collectively valued at more than $11 billion, a move likely to heighten frictions with China.

Among the approved sales is a package exceeding $4 billion that includes 60 M107A7 Self-Propelled Howitzers along with related equipment, 82 M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, 420 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) units, more than $1 billion in ALTIUS tube-launched loitering drones, and $353 million worth of TOW missiles.

In addition, a purchase valued at over $1 billion for a Tactical Mission Network, designed to support military communications and accompanied by necessary software, equipment, and services, received approval. Other greenlit sales include $375 million in Javelin missiles, $91.4 million for Harpoon missile repair support and equipment, and $96 million for AH-1W SuperCobra helicopter spare and repair parts along with associated gear.

Each of the proposed transactions was separately listed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the body responsible for announcing major foreign arms sales.

As stated by reports, the notifications trigger a 30-day review period in Congress, during which lawmakers can attempt to block the sales through a joint resolution. Historically, however, Congress has never succeeded in preventing any of these deals from moving forward.
