Taiwan Fines Meta Over Ad Transparency Failures
The fine concerns 23 recent incidents in which Meta was found to have provided insufficient clarity about advertising sponsors.
MODA stated that the firm violated the Fraud Crime Hazard Prevention Act, which obliges online advertising providers to publicly identify the individuals or organizations who authorized or funded an advertisement.
This is the second occasion Meta has faced such sanctions in Taiwan.
The company was previously fined NT$1 million (USD34,139) on May 22 for a similar offense.
Facebook is widely regarded as a significant platform for fraudulent advertisements in Taiwan.
According to a Global Anti-Scam Alliance poll featured in CommonWealth Magazine in late 2024, more than 60 percent of survey participants in Taiwan reported encountering scam content on Meta-owned platforms.
In its defense, Meta stated via the news agency that it has reinforced its advertiser authentication procedures since 2024, effectively restricting ad placements by unverified users.
The company added that it eliminated over 146,000 ad accounts and 1.6 million deceptive advertisements from its platforms during 2024.
Meta emphasized its commitment to further enhancing transparency and declared ongoing cooperation with MODA and the Criminal Investigation Bureau to bolster platform security.
